A Guide To Gay Chiang Mai

Golden Ball has a mixed clientele and is popular with gays. There are many gay places to visit nearby, but the scene in Chiang Mai is always changing and information on the internet is often out of date, so to help our gay visitors we've included an up to date guide to some of the gay venues in Chiang Mai. We'll do our best to update it regularly and we've also included a Google map to make some of the places easier to find.  If you know of any new venues, or information that is incorrect, please  let us know.

Chiang Mai is often referred to as the rose of the North and is a tranquil city rich in history and culture. It is many peoples favorite city in Thailand and has a sizeable ex-pat population. The following provides more background information about Chiang Mai www.chiangmainews.com

The gay scene in Chiang Mai is much more laid back than in Bangkok, or Pattaya. Most of the venues are small relaxing local bars, often outdoors and great for meeting people. Moreover, Chiang Mai seems to have a very large concentration of young gay Thais, many of whom come here to study and are keen to meet foreigners.  Golden Ball is particularly popular with gay Thai students.

Chiang Mai is close to the border with Myanmar and many of the guys here are of Burmese origin, often ethnic Shan, or Tai Yai. This gives a fine choice between the classically beautiful Northern Thai boys, and the slightly more masculine looking Shan.

There are a handful of more commercial bars; not quite the Bangkok go-go scene, but more informal with hosts to keep you company. They generally don't have dancers on stage go-go style, but most have a show, some quite raunchy.  Many of the cuties you will meet here are Shan.
